Pressure effect on temperature induced high-spin–low-spin phase transitions

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the transition temperature and the hysteresis widths of first-order spin crossover phase transitions is considered in the frame of the mean field theory and on the basis of the scope of recent pressure experiments. Relevant parameters for a qualitative description of the behaviour of spin transition compounds under pressure are derived and analysed.

The use of liquid metals as plasma facing components in tokamaks has recently experienced a renewed interest stimulated by their advantages in the development of a fusion reactor. Liquid metals have been proposed to solve problems related to the erosion and neutronic activation of solid walls submitted to high power loads allowing an efficient heat exhaust from fusion devices. Presently the most promising candidate materials are lithium and gallium. Evaluation of urodynamic studies by computer

In an attempt to simplify urodynamic evaluation, the data obtained from cystometry, urethral profile and flowmetry were analysed using the ICS recommendations for standardization and terminology. All studies were compiled from check lists feasible for computation. The aim was to establish standards and "typical" changes for the normal bladder and pathological states to enable automatic readout of computed data. The results did, in fact, show "typical" changes but failed to establish standard measurements suitable for completely computed diagnoses.

X-ray-diffraction study of the crystal structures and orientational glass state ofAr1−x(N2)xsolid solutions

Solid solutions of ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ have been investigated by x-ray powder diffraction in the range 0.5x1.0, 8T60 K, and under hydrostatic pressures up to 2200 bars. The structural hcp-cubic (Pa3) phase transition is identified as a martensitic transformation with a wide transformation hysteresis. For x0.8 and T30 K the solid solutions show the orientational glass state, which is characterized by a superposition of inhomogeneous and homogeneous lattice strains. A luminal glycoprotein drives dose-dependent diameter expansion of the Drosophila melanogaster hindgut tube

An important step in epithelial organ development is size maturation of the organ lumen to attain correct dimensions. Here we show that the regulated expression of Tenectin (Tnc) is critical to shape the Drosophila melanogaster hindgut tube. Tnc is a secreted protein that fills the embryonic hindgut lumen during tube diameter expansion. Inside the lumen, Tnc contributes to detectable O-Glycans and forms a dense striated matrix. Loss of tnc causes a narrow hindgut tube, while Tnc over-expression drives tube dilation in a dose-dependent manner. Abstract In industrial production, thermal processing of honey at 50 °C commonly induces liquefaction, i.e. it reduces the crystal count and viscosity and delays any subsequent crystallization. Magnetoresistance studies of the ferromagnetic molecular metal (BEDT-TTF)3[MnCr(C2O4)3] under pressure

(BEDT-TTF)3[MnCr(C2O4)3] is the first ferromagnetic molecular metal, in which organic layers of BEDT-TTF alternate with infinite layers of the bimetallic oxalate complex [MnCr(C2O4)3]-. While the bimetallic layer undergoes a magnetic phase transition into a canted ferromagnetic state at 5.5 K, the metallic character of the conductivity is not affected by the magnetic transition [Nature 408 (2000) 447]. We performed magnetoresistance measurements (B≤17 T) at low temperatures (T≥900 mK) and under hydrostatic pressures of up to 2.0 GPa.
